Soon after…
“Assessment completed, Seras boy! Here’s today’s payment! Take it!”
“Thanks, as always, Branch Chief.”
Since Douglas had called me over, I returned to the reception and took the money for selling my potions.
“No, thank you! I appreciate you always bringing high-quality potions, Seras boy! As a guild worker, having someone sell so many potions is a huge help! But isn’t it tough to make potions of that quality every single day?”
“Not at all! Plus, I get to study alchemy in the process, so it’s a win-win. I’ll keep making a lot more, so please keep buying them, Branch Chief!”
“Such dedication to study is admirable! Alright then, don’t worry! The guild will buy all you make, so keep up with your studies! Hahaha!”
Douglas laughed heartily, assuring me that I could continue my potion-making and selling efforts without worry. Just doing this might be enough to sustain me financially forever.
“But you know, come to think of it… Seras boy, why’s the son of a noble doing work like an apothecary? I mean, why become an adventurer in the first place? As a noble, you could just live comfortably without taking on such a dangerous profession, couldn’t you?”
“Huh? Uh, well…”
Then, Douglas asked me that question with a slightly curious look.
“Well, um… I guess it’s more like, ‘If you don’t work, you don’t eat,’ right? Plus, I believe a noble should actively help those in need! So, making potions is part of that, too. I just want to help people who are suffering from injuries!”
“Heh, as expected of you, Seras boy! You may still be a kid, but you’ve got an impressive sense of duty! Haha, keep studying hard, and someday, you’ll be a noble who helps a lot of people!”
“Th-thanks.”
In truth, I’m just making and selling potions to earn money the easy way… but I couldn’t say that, so I brushed it off with a vague response.
But Douglas seemed to believe my words, as he laughed heartily and encouraged me with all his support.
I’ve been with the Adventurer’s Guild for almost a year, and it seems Douglas trusts me to some extent.
Realizing I had such a supportive adult close to me gave me a bit of a warm feeling.
(Yeah, Douglas is nothing like my crappy old man…)
At that moment, an image of my old man’s face flashed through my mind.
By the way, I did tell my dad that I was getting an adventurer’s license to cover my living expenses. And then…
“What? You’re getting an adventurer’s license because you don’t have any money? Hmph, do as you please! But if you end up with deep injuries or even die, don’t expect any concern from us! If you’re going to die, do it alone, without bothering anyone!”
That’s what my old man said to me. What kind of parent tells their own child to ‘die’…?
It’s not like I expected him to support me, but to go as far as to say something so cruel to his own flesh and blood… he’s truly despicable.
I also know why my dad never gives me any money for living expenses. He uses the family’s funds to hire young, pretty women from town as maids.
And apparently, he has all kinds of fun with them every night. I overheard the servants gossiping about this in whispers.
So, my dad spends all his money hiring young, cute maids, leaving nothing for someone like me. Ha, it’s laughable… well, actually, it’s not funny at all!
One day, I’ll make him pay. That damn old man…
