Chapter 67

Reunion with twin sisters

――The Next Day.

To apply for the Explorer Ranger Exam, I, Regin, and Tiara headed to the Guild Union Branch in Ella Amo.

As a precaution, Fiole and Almoa were scouting around the exam venue.
This was to prepare for any potential attacks, even though we’d heard from the branch staff yesterday that everything seemed fine. Still, better safe than sorry.
Fiole had been eager to stick by my side since we had been acting separately for a while, but Almoa had managed to calm her down. I owe her for that.

Leaving things to those two for now—

“The problem lies here.”

I glanced behind me.

Regin was walking two steps behind, his head in the clouds.
He seemed so absent-minded that it was questionable whether he was even watching where he was going.

“Hey, Regin! Watch where you’re walking!”
“Y-yeah…”

Was he even listening?
He’d been acting the same during dinner last night and breakfast this morning. His unfocused gaze would suddenly snap back to reality as if startled, probably thinking, “What if I run into that girl again!?”

I could somewhat understand how he felt.
But his behavior screamed “suspicious.”

“Can he even pass the exam in that state?”
“Probably not,” Tiara, walking beside me, said bluntly, yawning with a complete lack of enthusiasm.

“Maybe failing spectacularly will wake him up.”
“You’re harsh as ever… even after all the effort we put in together.”
“Hmph. Dressing up in such ridiculous clothes like that—it’s just embarrassing.”

Her cheeks puffed in frustration.
Well, I could understand Tiara’s perspective. Very much so.

Regin’s outfit was outrageous.
Generously described as colorful, it was otherwise an eyesore—a jacket filled with garish primary colors. Apparently, he’d bought it as a reward from Almoa.

I recalled Almoa’s grim expression since yesterday.
She had tried to stop him but ultimately got overpowered and clearly regretted it.

“Almoa’s definitely going to be one of those overly indulgent moms to her kids in the future.”
“Yeah…”

I couldn’t argue. Sorry, Almoa.

Before long, the Guild Union Branch came into view.
Though not as grand as Wigarlus, this building was still massive—likely the largest in Ella Amo.
It was built along the edge of a crater that served as the exam site.

We flowed with the crowd into the building, heading to the temporary reception counter.
The area was bustling with noise. Something seemed to be causing a commotion.

“Why can’t we take the exam!?”

That voice…!

We pushed through the crowd, arriving in front of the reception desk.
There, standing across from the staff, were two girls. White hair, dark skin, and visibly worn clothing.
No doubt about it—those twin sisters!
But why were they trying to take the Explorer Ranger Exam?

“Whoa!”
“Hey, Regin!? Hold on!”

Before I could stop him, Regin dashed forward, excitement overtaking him.
This wasn’t good—he was oblivious to everything around him!

The twins turned to look, their expressions freezing in surprise.
Regin rushed toward them and, without hesitation, grabbed the younger sister’s hand.

“Eek!”
“We meet again! Amazing! It’s a miracle, haha! I’ve been thinking about you two ever since I first saw you—”

His rapid-fire words abruptly stopped.
Gently, his feet lifted off the ground.

“—Huh!?”

With a sharp exhale, Regin’s body spun midair before crashing to the floor, landing on his back.

“Gah!?”
“Do not touch my sister.”

The elder twin, holding Regin’s wrist, had effortlessly thrown him with impeccable form.
I’d thought she was the gentle type, but this was shocking.

“This is no time to just stand here! Hey, Regin, are you okay!?”

I helped the foolish boy to his feet.
Thankfully, he seemed to have no serious injuries.
Though wincing in pain, Regin had a goofy grin on his face.

“That was incredible. I think I’m even more in love…”
“You’re unbelievable,” I sighed heavily.

Tiara ran over, crouching beside Regin and whacking him hard on the head with a bundle of documents she’d brought along.
“Idiot brother!” she scolded.
At last, the blow seemed to bring Regin back to his senses, and he awkwardly scratched the back of his head.

Leaving Tiara to handle him, I turned to the twins.

“I’m sorry for the trouble he caused. And… we meet again.”
“Lord Isto,” the elder sister said clearly, addressing me by name.

Just like the first time we met, she gazed at me with transparent, earnest eyes.

“I… Ru-Ma… have always wished to see you again.”
“That name…”
“Yes! Lord Isto gave me this name. I am Luma, the one you brought back to life!”

Saying that, she—

“I’ve missed you!”

—threw herself into my arms.

“Shut up, shut up! You’re out, that’s what have been decided!” former staff Isto was expelled from the guild for being too low-level. Although his high administrative skills and discerning eye were indispensable for guild management, they were never been appreciated. The world is on the midst of unprecedented battle boom. While high levels and strong battle skills were on high demand, there was nowhere to hire Isto. At loss, Isto tries to work at an orphanage where he was once taken care of and encounters a girl who is about to be killed by a monster. The level difference between Isto and the enemy is more than four times. Moreover, the monster is a super-rare monster. Isto, however, tactfully defeats the monster and saves the girl. Then… The Gifted Skill [Awakening Appraisal] is released. By risking his life to defeat the monster, Isto’s natural talent blossomed. This [Awakening Appraisal] was an extraordinary ability that allowed him to release the hidden skills of others including copying and using their skills. The girl whom Isto saved was also found to have special combat skills through the [Awakening Appraisal]. By copying her skills, Isto was on his way to becoming an all-around strongman, which he had never imagined. Meanwhile, the guild that fired Isto has stopped its paperwork while on the state of collapse. Isto flatly refuses the request to “come back.” This is the story of a man who was banished for no good reason, who is loved by the genius girls who protected him, and who eventually (unwillingly) becomes a legendary adventurer through the power of [Awakening Appraisal].
