“Also, besides sound magic, I gained aptitude for three other types of magic… or maybe it’s more like the moment I touched the crystal, something flowed into me or appeared within me… it’s hard to put into words.”
“So basically, you’ve acquired three types of magic—that’s what you mean, right?”
“Yes, though it’s not like I can fully control them yet.”
I haven’t even tested them, so I don’t actually know what kinds of magic they are.
Well, they’re likely powerful, though.
“I see… is this magic you can’t tell your father about?”
“No, it’s not that kind of forbidden magic.”
“…I see. That’s a relief.”
My father lets out a sigh of relief, visibly reassured.
Did he think I might have an aptitude for necromancy or something? Well, most forbidden magics involve controlling life and death. If that were the case… there’s a fair chance I’d be banished from the family.
“Simply put, it’s magic involving beasts, demons, and dragons… that’s how I’d describe it.”
“Well… if you master those, it seems like no one would be able to stand against you.”
He’s laughing, but his serious expression hasn’t faded. He genuinely thinks that.
If I could master them, that is… though even starting now, that would probably take years.
“Perhaps. But I don’t plan to use these three types of magic regularly, and I’d rather not use sound magic openly, either.”
“…Is that because you don’t think anyone would believe you?”
“Yes, and if I’m honest, I think even you are only half-convinced, Father.”
Realizing that his true feelings have been exposed, Father gives a strained smile.
“Well, maybe a little. I know that high-level dragons have an ability known as dragon magic, but I’ve never heard of beast magic or demon magic. Anyway, putting that aside, Lagas, do you plan to attend school as if you don’t have any attribute-based magic abilities?”
His tone drops a bit, not out of anger but out of concern.
Nobles are generally expected to have some sort of attribute-based magic ability.
So, lacking such an ability could lead to discrimination… or, to put it lightly, bullying among the nobility.
“Yes, if it’s known that I can use four types of magic… especially the three involving beasts, demons, and dragons, it could attract trouble, or even provoke envy and resentment, causing people to target me or our family. Plus… I don’t want to stand out too much at school.”
“…Leaving aside that last reason, what you say isn’t something that can be dismissed. But without an attribute-based magic, it might be hard to live at the academy.”
Father speaks to me resolutely, with a look of reflecting on his own experiences.
Personally, I’d like to suggest not attending school in the first place. I want to become a hunter as soon as possible… though that would likely be opposed by not only Father but also Mother, my brothers, and sisters.
“It’ll be fine. Once I grow stronger, I’ll learn swordsmanship. And while I haven’t shown you yet, I already have a weapon I can rely on.”
“Sigh… truly, you’re always thinking ahead. This magic… no, these abilities, are you willing to tell me about them?”
“…Yes, since I’ve already told you about sound magic and the other three, I don’t mind.”
When I tell Father about my magic bullet ability, he reacts with laughter and surprise, as he’s never seen or heard of such an ability before.
After some small talk, I return to my room.
Once inside, I throw myself onto my bed and start thinking about my magic.
“Beasts, demons, dragons, huh…”
Beasts would enhance my physical abilities, demons… maybe similar to beasts? And dragons… maybe magic used by dragons or elemental breath attacks.
I’ll need to experiment to understand what magic I actually possess, so I’ll have to try using it little by little.
But I hope I never have to use it at school.
