Chapter 5

A Flood of Complaints

“Now, next is Cyril and… those two over there. State your names before stepping onto the field. Also, the start will be after I give the signal.”

“…Yes, I’ll be in your care.”

“Hyah, hyah! I’m Melia!”

“I’m… Uriel.”

“First, a bow. …Alright, now come at me.”

Hmm, it seems the previous mock battle had some effect, at least to some extent.

There are still a few students with defiant looks, but there are far fewer than before, and at least they are showing proper respect. I gave them some advice earlier, so now it will depend on how things go from here.

…The problem is that this is still the first class. There are two more classes today, and I’m seriously feeling gloomy about it.

“Ahhh! After a day’s work, a chilled ale is the best!”

“…Honestly, even though it’s inside the academy’s dormitory, drinking so openly is too much. Surely the students will see you.”

“I know, I know. This is my daily pleasure, so just let me enjoy it.”

One of my daily pleasures, so even though it’s Anon saying it, I won’t let anyone take it away.

Right now, I’m staying in the staff dormitory within the academy. Of course, as someone with the title of Grand Sage, I do have a private residence with a research lab, but during my temporary teaching assignment, I decided to stay in this dorm.

The room is small, but I’m used to cramped spaces since my past life, so it’s not a problem. After finishing my work, Anon came by, and we had a toast to celebrate the end of the first day.

“Still, just like Anon said, every class was in terrible shape. It was complete class collapse.”

“Yes! I don’t really understand what class collapse is, but for those who truly want to learn magic, it’s nothing but harmful…”

“Well, kids will tend to go along with those who are fooling around or lack motivation. The real cause of it, though, was the poor quality of the teacher, I think.”

“That’s true. We’re looking for a new teacher, so please wait a little longer.”

It seems they are at least looking for a new teacher. Well, it seems they were already searching before they asked me. This isn’t something I can solve, so I’ll leave it to Anon.

“That said, there are still some who are serious about learning magic. How about the other students?”

“…Yes, there are certainly students who are still trying to learn magic seriously even in this situation, and it’s truly heartening. But, of course, there were plenty of students who kept bringing up titles and family names, pretending to be important.”

After that, I had taught two more classes. In the first class, as expected, Cyril stood out as excellent, and there was also Melia, the commoner scholarship student who had been nervous at first but showed her abilities in the mock battle.

…However, in the other classes, there were even more students like Gale, who brought up titles and family names and resisted at every turn. Really, by letting those types get away with it, the other students also start acting out.

“By the way, I heard nearly 10 complaints have already come to the academy today. What kind of class did you hold?”

“Oh, it’s because they were being so disrespectful toward the teacher that I just showed them my strength in the mock battle. Don’t worry, no one got hurt, and I gave each of them proper advice.”

Other classes had the same horrible attitude as Class B, so I had them spar three against three in the training ground, collecting information while showing my own strength.

“Even if complaints come, once I show them a document with the royal seal and Geek’s name, they’ll all shut up in an instant. I’m looking forward to tomorrow! Heh heh, I wonder how they’ll react when they see that someone as ‘lowly’ as a temporary teacher has this kind of authority!”

Anon spoke with delight.

I imagine that until now, he’d been dealing with complaints from those types one by one. That’s enough to give anyone a stomach ache.

“That said, today’s class was just the warm-up. Tomorrow we have the special advancement class.”

“Yeah, I know.”

The first-year classes at this academy are divided into three groups: A, B, and C. There’s also the S class, which is a special advancement class for those who were especially excellent in the entrance exams. Classes A to C aren’t based on ability but rather evenly distributed to match similar levels.

The S class has just over 10 students, and it seems like a troublesome bunch. They are apparently difficult because of their abilities and their family backgrounds.

“Is the Third Princess there as well?”

Yes, the Third Princess of the country is in the S class.

After all, she’s a royal, so her power is far beyond that of mere counts. I wonder how things will unfold.
