Chapter 30

Misunderstanding③

The Princess Sitting Next to Me is a Sweet Girlfriend Only in Front of Me

After enduring a lecture that felt like both heaven and hell to me in various ways—an indescribable experience—today’s classes have all ended successfully.

With that, I’ll have some free time, so as usual, I plan to hole up in the library.

Magic is a discipline where relentless practice directly translates into strength. If my hands are free, I want to spend as much of my life as possible studying magic.

When I think about it, everything involving Fia has been quite irregular for my life.

Originally, even attending this academy was only barely worth it, considering the vast amount of resources and the presence of teachers who are pioneers in the field of magic.

For me, any time spent not studying magic is an irregularity in my life.

“Ah, it was kind of refreshing to attend lectures with you, Heim-kun.”

“Y-yeah… I guess so.”

Whenever I talk with Fia like this, those thoughts just fly out of my mind.

“Heim-kun, what are you planning to do after this?”

“I’m heading to the library to dig through some materials. I want to finish reading the document I was halfway through yesterday.”

“…Did you go to the library after finding out about my true identity?”

“Yeah, I did.”

Isn’t that obvious?

“What’s going on with your heart, Heim-kun…? Afterward, I couldn’t focus on anything else until I consulted with Father.”

“Well, even so, there’s nothing I can really do about it… So I figured I should just keep living as usual.”

“Wow, you’re such a magic bug.”

Fia seems genuinely impressed.

However, there’s no hint of sarcasm or malice in her words.

She truly thinks my actions are amazing.

…It’s a rare reaction, and somewhat unexpected.

“What about you, Fia? What do you usually do?”

“After this? It depends on the day. Hmm…”

She looks around.

We’re currently in a secluded corner of the academy, away from people.

Since we’re not in the reference room, it’s not exactly safe, but there aren’t many people around.

“I have work to do about 70% of the time. When I don’t, I help out with various things at the academy.”

Work — meaning official duties and her education as a princess.

As expected, being a princess keeps her busy every day.

“Today, I have work, but since I have some free time, I can chat a little longer.”

“Hmm, I see.”

I also have plenty of time before the library closes.

So, we could exchange some idle chatter…

“By the way, Fia.”

“Yes?”

“Would you let me join in on the helping out around the academy?”

—If that’s the case, why not let me assist with those tasks?

We could talk while working together.

That was my line of thought when making the suggestion.

Apparently, it’s not possible today, but starting tomorrow…

My schedule is flexible, and it seemed like a good idea.

B-but…

“Wha—!?”

Fia let out an incredible yelp and jumped back.

I’ve never heard her make a sound like that before.

When she’s genuinely surprised, it seems like her true nature slips out, just like when her identity was revealed.

But in everyday situations, this is how she reacts when startled. It felt a bit refreshing.

Oh, and as a side note, I did get permission to help out.

Despite being a commoner, I, Heim, was recognized for my talent and allowed to attend the Magic Academy as a scholarship student. One day, I discovered that the girl sitting next to me, Fia Carat, is actually this country's princess, Stellafia Magipastel. Though this revelation led to the two of us sharing her secret, for some reason, Fia began acting even more forwardly toward me than before I learned the truth…? Even though I’m called a genius, being a commoner surrounded by nobles at the Magic Academy meant I was looked down upon. The only one who treated me kindly was Fia, my seatmate. Kind-hearted, good-natured, and with a bit of a selfish streak that somehow only adds to her charm, she had a way of drawing me in. But why does Fia hold me, someone like me, in such high regard…?
