Chapter 3

I Want to Quit

Are you referring to a regular female knight, or a trash-tier female knight?

Humans and demons can never coexist.

Even if a thousand years were to pass, they would continue to oppose each other, engage in skirmishes, and kill one another.

It’s as though it’s their destiny to fight.

Humans create heroes, symbols of hope.

Demons create demon lords, embodiments of despair.

With them at the helm, they wage fierce wars.

“Ugh…!!”

“Kyah!”

Two figures, a man and a woman, roll on the ground screaming in pain.

Both are covered in wounds, but the man is more severely injured.

This isn’t because the woman was slacking off—it’s simply the difference between frontline and rear support fighters.

And now, the entity that inflicted such damage upon them approaches.

“Do you still wish to fight? No matter how hard you try, you’re no match for me.”

The golden-haired figure sways gracefully, exuding an air of nonchalance despite having just fought moments ago. This was Fraulein—her mismatched gold and silver eyes coldly observing the two with a piercing gaze.

Such overwhelming pressure radiated from her mere presence that it felt like their spines would freeze over.

Yet, Lucas—the man—explodes in anger.

“You bastard…! Are you mocking us!? Why won’t you just finish us off!?”

Lucas was a proud man. He didn’t want to be killed.

But the fact that this overwhelmingly superior being (man or woman?) refused to deliver the final blow infuriated him. It was clear he was being looked down upon—and that was unbearable.

“Huh? You want to die? Such feelings are incomprehensible to me. I’ve been helping you out of kindness, you see?”

Fraulein smirked faintly as she spoke.

“Kindness from a demon…? Don’t make me laugh!”

“Oh, even demons have kindness, just as some humans harbor malice. It’s the same principle. Demons can possess both good and evil. Though, technically, I’m not a demon.”

She offered a dazzling smile, one so radiant it could fluster anyone regardless of gender due to her striking beauty.

But for Lucas, it only served as fuel for his rage.

“You son of a bitch!!”

Enraged, Lucas charges forward. A physically imposing figure among men, he swings a massive battle axe with all his might—a blow powerful enough to crush even someone who appears frail like his opponent.

Yet, with ease, Fraulein parries the attack using nothing but a thin blade held delicately in one hand, sending him sprawling across the ground once again, adding fresh wounds to his battered body.

“Guhh!?”

“Lucas!?”

The woman rushes to his side, but it’s clear he won’t be able to fight anymore. While physical fatigue and injuries weigh heavily, the psychological toll of being toyed with cuts far deeper.

Prideful and unaccustomed to failure, Lucas feels utterly shattered by the humiliation of being utterly dominated without landing a single hit.

“(Strong… too strong… Is this level of power commonplace within the Demon Lord’s army? If so, do we even stand a chance…)”

The woman grimaces, despair creeping into her heart.

The Demon Lord’s forces—humanity’s sworn enemy.

And yet, this Fraulein wasn’t even one of the Four Heavenly Kings, let alone the Demon Lord herself.

The crushing realization that they couldn’t lay a finger on her was breaking her spirit.

“The reason you’re weak is partly due to your lack of experience… but seeing the state of the hero’s party, humanity’s beacon of hope, really says something.”

Yes, they were the chosen ones, humanity’s last bastion of hope, tasked with defeating the Demon Lord.

Selected from among the best of humankind, they carried immense pride and confidence.

But before Fraulein, that pride had been utterly crushed. Still, the woman hadn’t given up completely.

“…Go ahead, say it.”

“Hmm?”

“Sure, maybe we are weak. But Telecia … she won’t lose to someone like you.”

Admitting reliance on another person left a bitter taste in her mouth, but she couldn’t bear Fraulein’s condescending tone dismissing not just them, but the entire hero party.

True, they might be weak—but Telecia , the Hero, was different.

She was humanity’s greatest hope, the strongest warrior in the world.

“Telecia , huh? Ah, the Hero. I see. Unlike you insignificant fish, perhaps she might pose a challenge.”

Fraulein nodded, neither denying nor mocking outright.

Indeed, Telecia  was strong—powerful, beautiful, and pure.

That was why she had been chosen as humanity’s champion. She might very well be capable of defeating Fraulein.

The woman clung to that belief.

“But tell me, do you realize the fatal mistake you’ve made?”

“M-Mistake?”

Fraulein’s faint smile sent shivers down their spines. They hadn’t made any mistakes, had they?

Their near-death situation here was unexpected, but staying behind to hold Fraulein back while others advanced had been part of the plan—even Fraulein knew that.

“You stayed here to stall me while someone else moved ahead, right? Without knowing what—or who—lies beyond.”

“……!”

They faltered. Initially, the plan had been for everyone, including Telecia , to face Fraulein together.

What changed their course was the ominous presence Telecia  sensed ahead—an oppressive force akin to an invisible colossus standing before them.

A malevolent aura saturated with concentrated malice, unlike anything pure or righteous. Ignoring it wasn’t an option for someone as kind-hearted as Telecia .

“This will undoubtedly become the poison of this world.”

Never before had Telecia  spoken with such certainty. Determined to confront this entity, she pressed onward alone.

“S-She’ll win! No matter who’s there, she’ll crush them! She’s our Hero, the one who leads us all!”

Lucas roared. To them, Telecia  was an unwavering pillar of strength.

Cute, pure, and gentle—but also the strongest and most reliable Hero.

She wouldn’t lose. Soon, she’d obliterate whatever evil awaited ahead and return to save them.

Once that happened, even Fraulein’s cocky demeanor would crumble. That’s what they believed.

“Is that so? Then brace yourselves for despair.”

And then, their faith shattered.

A figure gently descended from the sky, landing softly on the ground as though dropped from a great height. Yet, unmoving, lying there lifelessly…

“Eh…?”

At first, Lucas and the others couldn’t comprehend what they saw. Because sprawled there, powerless, was none other than Telecia —the Hero, humanity’s beacon of hope.

“T-Telecia …?”

“N-No way…!?”

Their eyes widened in disbelief. Rushing closer, they saw no apparent fatal wounds on her.

And that’s what made it so unnatural.

Who—or what—could possibly bring down Telecia  in such a manner?

“You left everyone behind to face me because you thought I was the biggest threat, didn’t you? You sacrificed yourselves to buy time. Too bad. Your efforts were misplaced. Had you faced the real danger instead, you’d already be dead.”

It was true—they considered Fraulein the greater threat, which is why they left Telecia ’s team to deal with her.

If prioritizing the foe ahead meant sending Lucas along with Telecia , it wouldn’t have been surprising. And buying time?

Rather than defeating Fraulein, their strategy was to ensure she didn’t defeat them until Telecia  returned. But it had all been a grave miscalculation.

Crunch… crunch…

The sound of something heavy treading on the ground grew louder, accompanied by the metallic clanking of armor.

Each step reverberated ominously, signaling the approach of something formidable.

“Ugh!?”

“Kya…! What is this…? It’s crushing me…!”

No attack came. Just the sheer weight of its presence bore down on them, pressing them into submission. They collapsed under its pressure, kneeling involuntarily as though bowing was the natural response.

Fraulein watched with satisfaction, opening her mouth to speak.

“You’ve surely heard of it—the strongest and most malevolent being in this world. The harbinger of destruction and despair. Its name is…”

“Ah… ah…”

They knew.

They knew all too well. And that’s why, upon realizing this entity stood before them, they lost all hope.

――――The Dark Knight.

Despair incarnate had arrived.

“(…I want to quit.)”

Unaware of the dark knight’s thoughts, their resolve wavered.
