Chapter 3

The White Coat is a Battle Suit

“Alright, it seems everyone is ready. Are you feeling well, kid? I don’t want you making excuses later that you weren’t in top shape. If you’re not up to it, we can reschedule for another day.”

“…I’m definitely going to kill you!”

I led the B-class students to the training grounds, picking up the brats who had finished their treatment at the infirmary on the way.

This was a perfect opportunity for them to learn their place. The brat named Gale was glaring at me with murderous intent in his eyes.

“Still, this training ground has improved quite a bit since my time. They’ve reduced the pain to a tenth, huh? Back in my day, it was only cut down to about a third. They said enduring pain led to greater growth—ah, I miss those Spartan teachers.”

This training ground uses special magical tools that prevent injuries. Instead, the damage received translates into pain. It seems technology has advanced since my time, now reducing pain to just a tenth of what it used to be.

These magical tools are incredibly sophisticated, made with rare and expensive materials, and the maintenance costs are sky-high.

At one point, I thought about how invincible it’d be to constantly have this effect surrounding me. But once you understand how it works, you realize it’s impossible to pull off.

“Wait… Geek-sensei, are you really a graduate of this academy?”

“Yeah, though it was more than ten years ago.”

“Over ten years… Well, back then, you couldn’t get in with money alone. I suppose Geek-sensei must have the skills to back it up.”

“…………”

The way you’re putting it, it sounds like you can buy your way in nowadays…

Anon, the academy’s headmaster, wouldn’t allow something as shady as backdoor admissions, but he only took over this year. Maybe before that, such things were happening. If so, it’s no wonder the quality of both the teachers and students has declined.

Most of the teachers from my time are no longer here. When I asked Anon, he mentioned there had been a massive education reform, leading to a significant turnover among the faculty. That must’ve been when this academy started going downhill…

“Um, Geek-sensei, are you really going to conduct this mock battle in that outfit? That white coat just looks like regular clothing.”

“It’s fine. The white coat is my battle suit. To be honest, with magic reinforcement, any clothing can become battle-ready. Not that I think I’ll need to reinforce it for this.”

I’m wearing a dress shirt, tie, and a white coat. To me, the white coat isn’t just a symbol of medical professionals and researchers—it’s a battle suit. Only when I’m wrapped in this pristine white coat can I fully immerse myself in my research.

Incidentally, the academy uniforms and robes are enchanted with physical and magical resistances. While clothing doesn’t take damage within the training grounds, the pain feedback is influenced by your attire and gear.

Not that it matters to me—I don’t plan on taking any damage.

“Tch, you’re underestimating us!”

“Gale-sama, let’s make him regret it!”

The brat muttered something nasty under his breath. Well, I admit I was poking the bear a little.

The other students also seemed slightly annoyed. That’s fine by me—it’s better for assessing their capabilities if they take this seriously.

That said, lessons on defensive magic, which teach how to protect oneself and combat monsters or human adversaries, are vital. I’ve always believed it’s too important a subject to be left to incompetent instructors.

“Let’s not waste time. We’ll start now. The rules are simple: once the signal is given, you can use any means necessary to incapacitate your opponent. The match ends when a combatant takes enough damage to be deemed incapacitated, at which point a signal will sound.”

“Yes, a buzzer will go off, and the corresponding lamp for the incapacitated person will turn off.”

“Seems that part hasn’t changed. Alright, I’ll go in first—”

As I stepped onto the training field, the far-left red lamp above the arena lit up. Each time someone enters the field, the next lamp lights up. If someone takes incapacitating damage, their corresponding lamp goes out.

“Who’s up first? Cyril, you want to start?”

“Yes, since it was my suggestion, I’ll—”

“Step aside, Cyril! I’m going first!”

“…………”

“What? Got a problem with me, the heir of the Carlisle family?”

“…No, in fact, I’ll defer to you.”

Just as Cyril was about to step onto the field, the brat pushed her aside and took her place.

This brat… I’d really like to see what kind of upbringing led to such entitlement. His parents must be something else.

“Alright, you’re up first. You two over there, join him. I’ll take on all three of you at the same time.”

“What!?”

“Three at once?!”

“…How dare you mock us!”

The crowd stirred as I called out the two lackeys.

“I’m not mocking you. I’ll have the other students come at me in groups of three, too. It’s you lot who are underestimating me. Think about why I said that and why I demonstrated the reflection magic earlier.”

Their faces were red with anger, but I wasn’t trying to provoke them this time.

Even though I’m a researcher, I hold the title of Grand Sage.

If it’s just fighting, I could probably handle the entire class. But for now, I want to gauge their magical skills as well, so groups of three will do.
