An Ordinary Civil Servant’s Transfer to Another World A Gacha-Dependent Life Relying on Luck
Even though it’s a bit awkward to say about myself, I’m just an ordinary local government worker.
I became a public servant seeking a “stable life,” but reality turned out to be buried under piles of inefficient and meaningless work. The amount of work didn’t match the meager salary, and every day felt utterly empty.
“Suzuki-kun, do you have a moment?”
One day, I was called over by my boss, Section Chief Sasaki. I had a bad feeling about this.
People often think public servants can leave work on time, but that’s not true. It’s one of those workplaces where the people who get things done end up carrying more of the load — the classic “worker ant” principle. Those who work harder keep getting more work.
“Yes, what is it?”
Approaching the section chief’s desk with low spirits, I spotted a mountain of documents. My bad feeling seemed to be right on the mark.
“Suzuki-kun, could you handle these files for me…?”
He handed over a massive pile of folders. Clearly, there was no way one person could handle all of it. But it’s also true that there weren’t any colleagues I could rely on.
This is typical in public service.
“Are you telling me to do ALL of this…?”
“Yeah… sorry! Thanks!”
With that, the section chief went back to his own work. Seriously, we’re understaffed…
Still, I knew the section chief often worked late, so I swallowed my complaints at the last second.
Resigned, I started tackling the mountain of files. Most of them were recycled old materials, and honestly, they were neither interesting nor meaningful. Plus, the pointless page counts made everything feel even more tedious.
“Sigh… This isn’t ending anytime soon… This is the kind of work AI should be handling.”
I wanted to go home early and roll some gacha.
Turning my cheap salary, conveniently labeled as “average,” into gacha stones every day wasn’t exactly healthy, but I couldn’t resist the charm of charging and rolling.
In the end, I ended up working overtime until late at night.
Dragging my tired body out of the office, I headed toward the nearest train station.
“It’s already past 9 PM?”
Back in my school days, 9 PM still felt like early evening, but now, after a long day of work, it felt exhausting.
Most of all, it felt unfair that people leaving at 5 PM were earning the same salary as me.
Sighing at the countless times I’d felt anger in this life, I looked ahead and noticed a high school girl in uniform waiting at the crosswalk leading to the station.
Suddenly, a large circular light emerged from beneath her.
“Um… Are you okay?”
“Huh? W-what is this?”
The black-haired girl turned around, clearly confused by both the light and my voice.
“Can you move this way?”
“I-I can’t seem to gather my strength.”
The girl trembled slightly, likely from shock.
The light grew stronger. Though I didn’t understand the situation, it definitely felt ominous.
“Is it okay if I grab your arm?”
“Yes, please. I appreciate it.”
Thinking it would be better to confirm first to avoid accusations of sexual harassment, I gently grabbed her arm and tried pulling her away.
“Can you move a little?”
She shook her small head side to side.
I decided to push her forward, but just as I got closer, the light intensified, blinding me and forcing me to close my eyes.
That’s the last thing I remember.
Gradually, consciousness returned as I felt the cold hardness of a stone floor.
“Where… am I?”
I remembered working overtime… and heading home. So why was I here? Was this a dream? No, this felt too real to be a dream.
Forcing myself to sit up, I looked around to assess the situation.
As my eyes adjusted to the dimness, I began searching for clues. Suddenly, voices came from behind me.
“Oh… Just as the ancient prophecy foretold, it was a success.”
Men in robes were marveling as they approached.
At the same time, torch-like flames illuminated the area, making everything clearer.
“Ugh, so bright.”
Looking toward the voices, I saw four teenagers in uniforms, equally bewildered as I was.
Ah, the girl from earlier was among them.
Below me was a geometric pattern glowing faintly, resembling a magic circle from a fantasy novel.
“Welcome, brave heroes summoned from another world. I am the prime minister of this country.”
The man in the most elaborate robe addressed us, clearly the leader of the group. His demeanor was confident, setting him apart from the others.
But being immediately labeled as “heroes” upon summoning? Predictable. Based on everything so far, it was clear we were the “heroes from another world” the prime minister mentioned.
Still, even in this situation, I felt somewhat dazed, as if I were dreaming.
“Where is this?”
“Where are we…?”
The other high schoolers were equally confused, muttering questions.
“Your doubts are understandable. The king and princess will explain everything. Please, follow me.”
The prime minister gave instructions to the robed figures, who began guiding the high schoolers.
“Hey, do you think this is a dream?”
“Maybe.”
“But… aren’t those people speaking Japanese?”
“Yeah…”
Their conversation drifted over.
It was true. I was conversing in Japanese, and I understood their words perfectly.
While I was pondering, I noticed the robed group starting to move. For now, it seemed best to follow silently.
The room the prime minister led us to was an opulent audience chamber adorned with lavish furnishings. At the center was a large chair, occupied by a man wearing a crown.
Was he the king of this country? He exuded an aura distinct from the others, and beside him stood a woman in an extravagant dress.
As the prime minister guided us to the center of the room, I mimicked others kneeling down.
“Please, take a seat.”
Following the prime minister’s instructions, we sat before the chairs. The man resembling a king spoke.
“I am King Ludvik von Arstia III of the Kingdom of Arstia.”
His voice carried authority.
“I am Princess Aria von Arstia, the first princess.”
“The reason you’ve been summoned here is because of us, brave heroes. Please save our world!”
The phrase spoken by the self-introduced princess felt painfully cliché.
The king continued, summarizing the situation:
- Demons from the northern and eastern territories had suddenly invaded the kingdom.
- Although currently held at bay, the frontlines were engulfed in war.
- The kingdom’s people were suffering.
- Desperate, they performed an ancient ritual to summon heroes.
- Though selfish, they hoped we would help save the kingdom despite being summoned for their convenience.
After the king finished, the princess spoke with a prayer-like gesture.
“Our world is embroiled in escalating conflict with the demons. Brave heroes, please lend us your strength.”
We, the summoned ones, remained silent, exchanging glances.
Two male high schoolers, two female high schoolers, and me—an older guy.
Clearly, I was out of place.
“Um… Do we have the right to refuse?”
One of the male high schoolers, tall with brown hair and a handsome face, hesitantly raised his hand. Definitely a soccer club type.
“I apologize, but brave heroes, you have an obligation to save this world.”
“What…? You can’t just spring this on us!”
“We know it’s selfish, but since you were summoned through the ritual, we ask you to take on this responsibility. Of course, the kingdom will provide maximum support.”
The princess’s words left the other high schoolers looking uneasy.
Understandably so. Being told to fight demons out of nowhere after living peaceful lives in Japan was overwhelming.
“There’s nothing we can do!”
“No, brave heroes, you possess incredible hidden potential. To unlock it, let us first check your stats.”
She gestured toward a large crystal ball in the center of the table, clearly designed for divination.
“Place your hands over the crystal and focus on the phrase ‘Status Open’.”
The high schoolers followed her instructions, and I did the same.
A window about the size of a head appeared before me, displaying my stats.
