“Unbelievable… Unbelievable! Investigate it properly one more time! There’s no way I’m not chosen as a ‘Hero’! No, not just a hero—I’m not even a ‘Class Holder’… I’m disqualified and labeled as a ‘Commoner’?!”
In a world embroiled in a long conflict to defend its territory from the invasion of demonkind emerging from the Demon Realm, many humans have thrown themselves into battle, and the strong are revered, leading to the birth of numerous heroes.
In humanity, there was not just one path to gain power and become a hero.
Those with physical strength became ‘Warriors.’
Those with magical talent became ‘Mages.’
Those with both talents became ‘Magic Warriors.’
Both Warriors and Mages, along with many other paths, are referred to as ‘Class Holders,’ and no one knows initially which class they belong to.
Among the numerous classes, there is one class that only those with divine talent selected by the gods are allowed to belong to.
That is the one and only supreme class known as the pinnacle of all human classes.
That class is called the ‘Hero.’
On the other hand, many exist who are deemed ‘disqualified’ with neither the talent nor qualifications to belong to any of those classes. These individuals are forced to walk the path of ‘Commoners.’
The selection ceremony that sorts these individuals is conducted once a year, for a lifetime, for those over the age of 15, under the supervision of ‘Saints’ dispatched from the ‘Eternal Neutral Holy City,’ which never takes sides with any nation, and sometimes mediates between countries or acts as witnesses.
The results delivered in that selection are registered as absolute across the entire world.
“I am the strongest of the Imperial Magic Knight Training School! My magical power, my martial power—sure, I might not be too bright, but I won the Imperial Capital Magic Sword Tournament this year with overwhelming strength! I even defeated active elite knights of the Empire! So why the hell am I not chosen as a hero? Not only that, I’m disqualified from being a Warrior, Mage, Magic Warrior, and every other class! I haven’t done anything wrong! I’ve lived a life of abstinence, avoiding all sorts of lewdness! Above all, on my days off, I engage in volunteer cleaning activities and helping others to build a good reputation—”
In a sense, this signifies that everything about one’s life’s future is determined. Thus, there are those who rejoice in the result, those who despair, and simultaneously those who raise their voices in discontent.
“I do not know your background up until now. Therefore, I am stating the facts without any preconceptions.”
And today, the selection ceremony was held.
The venue was a gigantic cathedral located in the imperial capital of the great empire, the leader of the continent.
There were four ritual rooms set up in the north, south, east, and west, where four Saints dispatched from the Holy City individually selected the young people who would carry the future.
An incident occurred in one of those ritual rooms.
“The ‘Magic Mirror’ used in this selection ceremony sees through the potential of those reflected, determining their class. And you, far from being a hero, have been deemed disqualified without qualification even in other classes, resulting in the label of ‘Commoner.’”
With long, beautiful silver hair, dressed in pure white holy garments, and possessing an unblemished beauty that captivates all—regardless of age or gender—the expressionless Saint calmly declares this.
The one who leans forward, unable to accept the Saint’s selection, and confronts her is a young man known as a prodigy, desired by royalty and nobility across the entire empire for this selection ceremony.
“Hey, this is bad! In the northern ritual room, that Damon was declared disqualified!”
“Wait, Damon was disqualified? Not even a hero, but not a Class Holder either?!”
“That’s absurd; it can’t be true! Because that’s Damon!”
“In terms of combat ability, he wouldn’t lose to our Knight Order or the training school! That Damon, who was said to be guaranteed a Class Holder, is disqualified? And labeled a Commoner?”
“B-but if the ‘Magic Mirror’ didn’t react at all during the Saint’s selection, that must mean…”
All the imperial knights who were present to guard the Saint and witness the selection were shaken.
This was such a monumental incident that a young man known as a prodigy, Damon Gokuwa, could not become a hero, nor even a Class Holder, causing national uproar.
“This is nonsense! Even if I were to concede that I lack the qualifications to be a hero, there’s no way I wouldn’t even be a Class Holder! I’ve never lost to a Class Holder! If not, Saint! You must be mistaken! Or perhaps the mirror is broken! Get it together; look properly, you fraudulent Saint!”
And Damon, who had more confidence than anyone else, believing that there was no one superior to him, could not contain himself and lunged at the Saint.
With shining golden hair, a lean yet well-built physique, and an innate springiness in his body. Within him lies an unmatched vast magical power. From a young age, he was called a ‘prodigy,’ and everyone regarded his future as ‘the strongest candidate for Hero,’ ‘guaranteed to be a Class Holder.’
Yet he was labeled a Commoner—a result no one could have anticipated.
It was only natural for Damon to voice his objections, violently grasping the Saint’s pure white robes and hurling furious insults, as if he were about to strike her.
“Wait, Damon! What are you doing to the Saint!”
“If anything happens to the Saint dispatched from the Holy City, we will turn all allied nations into enemies!”
However, the knights present at the ceremony, realizing that was absolutely unacceptable, all ten of them jumped in to restrain Damon.
“That’s a lie, a lie, a lie, a lie! There’s no way I’m disqualified! I’m a man destined to become a hero! I’m going to step onto the battlefield and engrave my name in history as a great hero! This is a lie, a lie, a lie!”
Even as he was pinned to the floor, Damon shouted loudly.
However, in response to such Damon, the Saint said…
“You have neither the capacity nor the talent for that. Walk the path of an ordinary life as just a Commoner.”
“!?!”
In the next moment, Damon’s anger reached its peak.
