Chapter 65

The Candidates

A week has passed since I became an officer of the Demon Nation.

The prototype of the Demon Nation’s version of a holy scripture—a magic tome called the Black Healing Book—has been successfully completed.

I heard that the narrative parts were enthusiastically written by the tengu race’s Inasa, while the magical gimmicks were crafted with equal enthusiasm by the witches of the magical research association, Sabbat Sorcière.

…It’s truly helpful to have people around who are brimming with creative and research energy. However…

“Why is it about me, though?”

That was my first thought upon finishing the Black Healing Book.

It took me about fifteen minutes to read through.

The short story detailed my exploits during the Elden Reclamation Operation, from liberating the concentration camp to fending off the hero.

And all of it was written in a style reminiscent of the Bible—myth-like, to be specific.

“But… it seems to be mostly factual, doesn’t it?”

The room was one of the offices in the Demon King’s castle, specifically assigned to me as a Demon Nation officer.

Beside me, my newly appointed subordinate, the familiar Milphobia, was flipping through the Black Healing Book with a suppressed chuckle.

“I particularly like this part from Chapter 38:

‘Inasa raised his fist, shouting, “I won’t let this saintess live!” But the Savior said, “What will violence achieve?” Yet the enraged Inasa didn’t listen and shoved the Savior aside. The Savior, unable to brace for the impact, tumbled backward. Realizing that his reckless violence had even harmed his own savior, Inasa deeply repented.’”

Milphobia read the passage aloud, covering her mouth to stifle a laugh, her shoulders trembling.

“It’s a touching story, but… I can vividly imagine it. The scene on the ground—Lord Alaya  is rather frail, after all. You must’ve rolled back so gracefully… pfft…”

“Well, it’s not untrue, but… did I really say such a thing?”

They seemed to have polished my actions and words to incorporate some kind of moral lesson here and there.

I mean, the chapter title itself was The Savior in White Robes.

“So, I’ll be distributing this pseudo-autobiography to the candidates who might become my subordinates? Doesn’t that make me seem a bit unhinged?”

“That’s nothing new, Lord Alaya ,” Milphobia replied with a sigh.

“Your eccentricities are already well-known, alongside your exploits at the Alaya  General Clinic.”

“Eccentricities? What do you mean by that?”

“Such as entering a wyvern’s stomach, reattaching a Dullahan’s head, or keeping a nightmare in the spirit reservoir displayed in the waiting room…”

“Is that odd?”

“From the perspective of an average demon, absolutely.”

So that’s how it is.

All my previous medical endeavors had been met with gratitude, and the nightmare was well cared for, so I never thought anything was amiss.

“Well, it’s too late to rewrite it now. There’s no time, and I did leave the story entirely up to them. The responsibility is mine, so I guess we’ll go with this.”

“I doubt anyone will mind. From what I hear, most of the candidates Lord Eisei gathered are here because they were inspired by your exploits in Elden. I imagine they’ll be thrilled to learn more about it.”

“Is that so?”

“I believe so.”

In that case, I suppose it’s fine.

That said, there’s one part I’ll need to have revised in the future:

Chapter 49, which contains this line:

‘The Savior raised a blinding pillar of darkness and brought the brave dead back to life.’

In other words, resurrection.

This is not something I want widely known.

Considering how the saintess reacted in Elden, even the half-baked papers I left behind at my old clinic had a significant impact on the Church of the Kingdom.

If this story, based on actual events, spreads in the Demon Nation, who knows what might happen?

Demons might take extreme actions upon learning about the possibility of resurrection.

The likelihood of someone targeting me increases.

“…I’m probably overthinking, but it’s better to be safe than sorry.”

“Lord Alaya ? Is something wrong?”

“No, nothing. Anyway, it’s about time, isn’t it?”

“Yes, it seems so.”

Milphobia glanced at the clock on the wall as she replied.

At that moment, there was a knock on the office door.

The voice of Demon Nation’s Chief Medical Officer, Eisei, came from outside.

“Lord Alaya , I’ve brought the 21 candidates for the Dark Healer training program!”

In order to make money, the young man "Kiwi Alaya" was running a clinic as a dark healer in the kingdom. However, with the outbreak of war between the kingdom and the demon kingdom, he was labeled a heretic. Threatened by the kingdom's army that he would be burned at the stake for heresy unless he closed his clinic and assisted in torturing captured demon soldiers, Kiwi immediately decided: "If that's the case, I'll just defect." Since he couldn't make money in the kingdom, he devised a plan to defect and decided to work in the demon kingdom. Although his initial motive was purely self-interest, his sincere and responsible work ethic, along with the demons’ favorable misunderstandings of him, allowed Kiwi to steadily build trust and wealth in the demon kingdom. Meanwhile, in the kingdom that let Kiwi slip away, the soldiers of the demon kingdom, who seemed to recover quickly from their injuries, began to pressure them, causing the once advantageous war situation to gradually shift...?
