Chapter 14

Let's Try Using Magic

I woke up to the sound of my smartphone alarm.

It was seven in the morning. I rose from my sleeping bag and yawned softly. It had been a while since I camped in a tent, but surprisingly, it was comfortable, and I must have slept well.

“Must be thanks to the protection of the Creator God. I feel like the quality of the tent has improved compared to before.”

Not just the tent, but the mat and sleeping bag also provided an excellent sleeping experience.

Thanks to that, I felt refreshed and my condition was exceptionally good.

I put the open magic book back into my item box and used purification magic to clean my whole body.

The sweatshirt I was wearing didn’t need washing, and I probably wouldn’t need to brush my teeth either.

“Life magic is surprisingly easy to use, isn’t it?”

Today, I decided to practice using magic as I went along. I changed into the clothes I wore yesterday and stepped out of the tent.

“What nice weather. …I wonder what that huge bird flying in the sky is?”

Instead of the refreshing chirping of small birds, a giant bird with a gruff voice was soaring in the air. Good morning, other world.

For now, I’m just glad it’s not a dragon flying up there.

It seems the barrier of the tent with the Creator God’s blessing and the invisibility technique are doing their job well, as the monsters above didn’t seem to notice me.

“Now, what should I have for breakfast?”

I decided to save the contents of the cooler box for dinner and keep breakfast simple.

I boiled water using a small pot on a gas burner. The water came from the life magic I had summoned.

I summoned my status board and decided to prepare breakfast using the summoning magic online shopping.

“Pastry bread, instant coffee, and soup stock for 300 points. Summoning purchase, done.”

I chose a powdered soup with a potage flavor. There were three servings. I picked a well-known brand of instant coffee that I frequently drink. It was surprising to find this coffee at a 100 yen shop, even though the bottle was a bit small.

“I prefer black coffee in the morning, so I’ll buy sugar and milk at noon.”

I made potage soup in my favorite stainless steel mug, enjoying it while nibbling on melon bread.

After the meal, I drank black coffee from the cleaned mug using purification magic.

“Mmm, that was delicious. I didn’t mind at all that it was from a 100 yen shop.”

The pastries were also from a famous manufacturer, and their taste didn’t differ at all. It seems I can manage just fine in terms of food in this other world.

“I wonder if they’re getting enough to eat? I should send them today’s share first.”

Yesterday, I thought about sending them some seasonings and chose salt, pepper, soy sauce, and mayonnaise.

What should I send today?

“I hear the ingredients are good, so maybe some sauces. A marinade for grilled meat and steak sauce that goes well with meat dishes. And a dressing to make vegetables taste better. If it’s my choice, definitely sesame sauce!”

I quickly purchased those through summoning and sent them off. It was a morning email, not a morning call. Eat well, everyone!

I received a flood of gratitude emails from the three of them.

Indeed, food is important. I thought I’d regularly send them seasonings and sauces.

After cleaning up after breakfast, I stored the cooking utensils, table, and chairs back into the item box.

Now, should I fold up the tent? As I was contemplating that, I suddenly paused. Could I possibly store it just as it is?

I decided to give it a try, so I made sure to remove just the pegs first.

“Alright, let’s try this. Storing the tent in its current state in the item box!”

I felt the tent I was touching disappear in an instant. Success.

“Yes! This saves me the trouble of setting up the tent…!”

I didn’t dislike setting it up, but spending about thirty minutes each time was a bit of a hassle, so I was grateful for this storage skill.

(Still, just how much can this item box store?)

Since I could store large items like the tent, it seemed to have a large capacity.

I once again stared intently at the skills section of my status board to identify the “item box.”

A description appeared. It seemed my appraisal skill had leveled up since it was more detailed than yesterday.

“Item box, level 1. Storage capacity is 20 square meters. About twelve tatami mats worth? Time inside the box is stopped, so living creatures cannot be stored.”

The tent fit within the space, but I wanted to increase the storage capacity for the future.

My appraisal skill leveled up simply by appraising, but for the item box, it seemed that increasing my magical power was necessary.

To raise my magical power, it looked like I needed to level up by using magic.

“I guess I have no choice. I’ll defeat monsters using magic as much as possible.”

The magic book instructed me to get used to using the four elemental life magic: water, fire, wind, and earth.

Since I hadn’t used wind and earth yet, I decided to challenge myself with the water magic I was most familiar with first.

“I’ll create a water ball with Water and hit something with it!”

I aimed the magical water ball at a Glas Mouse that caught my eye. It squeaked and rolled over, but it didn’t seem to take much damage.

The Glas Mouse, now literally a wet rat, charged at me with an angry expression.

“Was my water ball too weak…? Then how about this?”

I launched a basketball-sized water ball at the Glas Mouse, which was rolling after being deflected by a light shield. I concentrated and covered the mouse’s head with the water ball.

“If it’s a living creature, suffocating it should defeat it.”

Since monsters and magical beasts are also living creatures, I planned to use the drowning tactic with water magic.

The Glas Mouse thrashed around, making splashing sounds before it eventually lay still.

“…Did I defeat it?”

Confirming it didn’t move at all, I reached out with a gloved hand to retrieve it.

“Yeah, this looks usable. To get accustomed to water magic, I’ll continue using this method for a while.”

Maintaining the water ball created with the life magic Create Water didn’t use up much magical power, so I decided to keep the water ball floating to help me get used to magical manipulation.

“Oh, I found another Glas Mouse.”

I made sure to keep my hand axe in my backpack and leisurely walked around defeating magical beasts.

The water ball magic seemed surprisingly effective, allowing me to easily take down not just glass mice but also Horn Rabbit . It was nice not having to touch the bloody corpses.

“Oh, slimes. They’re resistant to water… So they should be weak to fire?”

I left the water ball on standby and used the life magic Ignite Fire to start a fire.

I poured magical power into a fire spark about the size of a fingernail, making it grow larger. When it reached the size of a tennis ball, I threw it at the slime. It made a sizzling sound as it evaporated, and the slime disappeared.

I picked up the remaining magic stone and grinned.

“Magic is so convenient. And it’s fun!”

I had been hesitant to use fire magic due to my fear of starting fires, but it seemed I could extinguish the fire at will.

“It doesn’t seem like using fire magic in the forest will spread like a forest fire.”

While water magic seemed to be the cleanest way to defeat enemies, fire magic likely had the highest attack power.

I wanted to make sure to learn fire magic, just in case I ran into tough monsters.

“Using wind magic in combination with fire magic seems powerful, and earth magic would also be useful not just for combat but for daily life, so I want to learn that too.”

I didn’t dislike learning through trial and error. After all, I was a jack-of-all-trades, a talented type.

I found joy in gradually making things my own through diligent effort, even if I couldn’t become a genius like my family members.

(Well, I envy geniuses too. They effortlessly reach the optimal solution while I take my time to finally find the right answer.)

Surrounded by such exceptional beings, the reason I hadn’t fallen apart until now might be that they genuinely cared for me.

“…I think they’re doing their best too, and I need to build my base soon.”

At the very least, I wanted to use all attributes of magic with the elegance of a high elf.

With that small ambition in mind, I concentrated on practicing simultaneously manipulating the water ball and fireball.
